SC Johnson Helps Families Learn More About the Products They Use Every Day

SC Johnson Helps Families Learn More About the Products They Use Every Day

Racine, Wis., (January 26, 2012) /PRNewswire/ — SC Johnson announced today the release of its Exclusive Fragrance Palette that was more than two years in the making. This fragrance palette provides a comprehensive list of the fragrance ingredients found in the company’s products and is accessible to consumers through www.whatsinsidescjohnson.com, the company’s relaunched ingredient disclosure website. The goal is to help families learn more about the ingredients that are in products they use in their homes every day, and to help consumers feel confident about the fragrances found in SC Johnson products like Windex®, Glade® and Pledge®.

“We want all of our ingredients to be transparent, so consumers can make their own, informed choices on what to purchase,” said Fisk Johnson, Chairman and CEO of SC Johnson. “We also want to earn the trust and confidence every day of the people that buy our products because we work hard on our ingredient choices and strive to continually improve our products.”

In March 2009, SC Johnson announced that it was going beyond an industry-wide “Consumer Product Ingredient Communication Initiative” in a number of ways, by committing to make ingredient information available in three ways (online, on pack and by phone); by committing to list all of the ingredients included in its products, including dyes, preservatives and fragrance ingredients; and by committing to make the information available in English, Spanish and French. Today, SC Johnson announced the completion of this commitment through the release of its Exclusive Fragrance Palette.

Our Exclusive Fragrance Palette
Fragrances are both creative and complicated. Many companies develop their fragrances from a list of more than 3,000 fragrance molecules published by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), which shows fragrance ingredients used in consumer goods worldwide, all of which have passed IFRA’s standards.

SC Johnson takes the review of fragrance ingredients a step further. Fragrance ingredients are evaluated not only under the IFRA standards, but also under SC Johnson internal requirements. These internal requirements may look at the same criteria as IFRA, such as carcinogenicity, mutagenicity or reproductive toxicity, but the SC Johnson standard may take a stricter or different view of an ingredient. In some instances, additional factors are considered such as consumer confidence with ingredients or other scientific viewpoints. As an example, in early 2009, SC Johnson committed to removing the phthalate DEP from its fragrances in response to consumer concerns, even though DEP has been extensively researched and has been deemed safe by various scientific bodies. This was the only phthalate used in its fragrances and the company is meeting its commitment to remove it. The end result is SC Johnson’s Exclusive Fragrance Palette, which is smaller and more exclusive than the IFRA list.

Ingredient Website Offers Better Resources
As part of the release of the palette, SC Johnson is also introducing an enhanced website, designed to provide families with the product and ingredient information they are looking for, including features such as a fragrance education section, comprehensive product definitions, FAQs, links to other resource websites and more.

The ingredient website will offer additional resources for families looking to learn more about what’s in the products they use in their homes. Enhanced product definitions will describe ingredients and the role they play in products. FAQs offer easy to understand answers to the most commonly asked questions and in keeping with the company’s commitment to transparency, the website offers links to alternate sites containing ingredient information, educational materials and more.

Enhanced Labels
Beginning in 2012, SC Johnson will start rolling out product labels that list ingredients using their International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients names (INCI), a naming system used by the personal care products industry that is recognizable and familiar to many consumers. The move will be completed over several years.

A History of Doing What’s Right
SC Johnson’s ingredient leadership extends the company’s long history of doing what’s right for people and the planet. In 2001, SC Johnson internally developed its ingredient selection process called its Greenlist™ process. SC Johnson’s Greenlist™ process classifies raw materials according to their impact on the environment and human health. The company’s goal with the Greenlist™ process is to increase year-on-year the percentage of ingredients used in its products that are rated “Better” or “Best” by the Greenlist™ process. In 2001, the total “Better” or “Best” ingredients by weight of raw materials used in the company’s products was 18 percent. In 2010, this reached 51 percent. SC Johnson’s Greenlist™ process is patented by the company and the company received the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge award in 2006 for its Greenlist™ process.

Cancer Among Minorities with HIV/AIDS

Cancer Among Minorities with HIV/AIDS

By the National Cancer Institute

BETHESDA, Md., Jan. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Racial and ethnic minorities in America have been hit harder than white Americans by the HIV/AIDS epidemic–they make up about one-third of the population but two-thirds of all cases. In 2009, African Americans made up 14 percent of the population but accounted for 44 percent of all new HIV infections. And Hispanics made up 16 percent of the population but 20 percent of new cases in 2009.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110316/MM66939LOGO)

All patients infected with HIV, including racial and ethnic minorities, are benefiting from new, more effective therapies developed over the last 15 years. But as patients are living longer, the distribution of cancer has shifted dramatically. While the types of cancer that have been typically associated with AIDS progression are on the decline in the HIV/AIDS population, other types of cancer are now on the rise.

A Tale of Two Diseases

Cancer and HIV/AIDS has always been "a tale of two diseases," according to researchers at the NCI. Infection with HIV not only weakens the immune system, leading to AIDS and increasing the risk of opportunistic infections, but also increases the risk of several types of cancer.

One of these cancers is Kaposi sarcoma, or KS. Before the HIV/AIDS epidemic, KS was extremely rare, but with the onset of the epidemic it became more common. Indeed, the increase in KS helped alert doctors to the epidemic in the first place. KS is now one of three cancers, along with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and invasive cervical cancer, whose presence is part of the criteria for defining whether a person infected with HIV has developed AIDS. In 1995, 51,414 people died of AIDS, and 34,000 people with HIV had developed one of these signature cancers in the previous five years.

Since then, "progress against HIV infection and AIDS, diagnoses once perceived as an automatic death sentence, has been striking," said Dr. Robert Wiltrout, director of NCI's Center for Cancer Research. In 2005, AIDS deaths numbered about 17,000, a reduction of nearly 65 percent from a decade earlier. The incidence of "AIDS-defining" cancers also dropped over this period, from 34,000 in 1991 through 1995 down to about 10,000 between 2001 and 2005.

Thanks to better treatments, four times as many people were living with AIDS in 2005 as in 1991.  Also, as people with HIV have begun living longer, they face an increased risk of other types of cancer, for several reasons: They often have more exposure to other viruses or agents that cause cancer, their immune systems are somewhat weakened, and the general risk of cancer increases with age.

The most common non-AIDS-defining cancers in patients with HIV are anal, lung, and liver cancers and Hodgkin lymphoma. These four cancers made up nearly half of all non-AIDS-defining cancers diagnosed in this population from 2001 through 2005. Higher risks for these cancers reflect co-infections such as human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B and C viruses, and Epstein-Barr virus, as well as higher smoking rates in the HIV/AIDS population. Thus, although fewer people now die of AIDS, cancer is emerging as an important cause of death for the HIV-infected population.

Preventing cancer

Preventing cancers that are increasing among the HIV-infected population is now a major focus of people who treat those with HIV. This effort includes trying to combat viral co-infections that cause cancer through prevention, screening, and treatment and avoiding exposure to other risk factors, such as smoking. Both men and women who are infected with HIV should discuss screening options for cancer with their medical providers. The risk of lung cancer can be reduced by quitting smoking. Because HIV-infected people have a higher risk of lung cancer, it is especially important that they do not smoke. Also, determining a patient's hepatitis status can sometimes lead to effective early intervention that may be able to reduce the risk of liver cancer.

Finally, for individuals who are not yet HIV infected, prevention of HIV-associated cancers should include prevention against HIV infection in the first place.  And since many HIV-related cancers are caused by HPV, it is important for male and female children to be vaccinated against HPV infection before they are sexually active.

These prevention efforts are especially important for racial and ethnic minorities, who make up more than half of all HIV patients. Nearly four in five women with HIV/AIDS are from these groups, and an even greater number of children with the disease are also from these groups.

The NCI has made substantial contributions to AIDS research since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic and today supports a broad and robust research program in this area. NCI leads the National Cancer Program and the NIH effort to dramatically reduce the burden of cancer and improve the lives of cancer patients and their families, through research into prevention and cancer biology, the development of new interventions, and the training and mentoring of new researchers. Procera avh – Remember This Advice For Keeping Your Memory Sharp!

Procera avh – Remember This Advice For Keeping Your Memory Sharp!

How To Improve Memory

Losing your memory is not a sign of the natural aging process. Many seniors’ memories are as clear and vivid as any young persons. If you are a senior and are beginning to become overly forgetful it may be a medical condition rather than just getting older. This article will guide you towards figuring out whether it is something medical, or just normal forgetfulness.

When meeting new people at a meeting, it is okay to cheat a little to spur your memory later. Take a little time after the meeting to take a few notes about the people on the back of the business card so you can prepare for meeting them again in the future. Notes can be about their hair color, where they went to school, kids, or any other conversation starters for the next time you meet.

Try to remain calm. Not being able to remember something can stress you out and cause you to become anxious. Take a few deep breaths and, calmly, try to access your memories. Anxiety and panic make it far more difficult for you to remember specific things. It is more efficient to keep your cool.

Use mnemonic devices to help you remember information. The best mnemonics use humor and positive imagery to help you recall facts, so come up with a song, joke, poem or rhyme to help you memorize important segments of information. The simpler the mnemonic, the easier it will be to remember.

As was stated in the beginning of this article, losing your memory is not a sign of the natural aging process. Everyone is forgetful from time to time which is perfectly normal. If it is becoming more than occasional, it may be a medical condition. Apply the advice from this article to help you explore which one it may be.

Best Collagen Cream – Should I Be Trying To Find This?

Best Collagen Cream – Should I Be Trying To Find This?

Collagen really helps to firm the skin and elastin really helps to supply the flexibility, or elasticity that we know and love. As all of these substances are depleted from our body, the effects of gravity begin to take over and this is why we view sagging skin, wrinkles and those betraying “bags” under our eyes. However, if we were in the position to stimulate skin to create collagen and elastin yet again, then we could be on to something. Therefore you should consider whether the best affordable collagen cream that you are searching for has the capacity to encourage elasticity and firmness by inducing the regrowth of elastin and also collagen within the skin. Many professionals have proposed that zinc and also copper may be useful here and might regenerate new skin tissue to enhance the synthesis of collagen and elastin. A stronger and much more flexible outer layer of skin can help to lessen the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Instead of just seeking to “force” collagen and elastic into the facial skin somehow, we ought to concentrate on the generation of healthy skin cells themselves. When we do this, we’ll instantly see a noticeable difference in the levels of collagen and elastin, an ability to fight those ever-present “free radicals” and a means of enhancing our very own, natural anti-oxidant defenses.

Natural Cold Sore Remedies That Work Fast

When you have cold sores, you definitely want them to go away as soon as it can. With modern treatments today, you still need to wait for several days before you can leave home without worrying about infecting your friends or family.

That is why most herpes victims are always on the lookout for natural cold sore remedies that work fast. Of course, you can't expect an overnight miracle. But at least, you should be cleared from the HSV1 in less than 2 or 3 days.

So, what are some home remedies that can help you? Ice is always mentioned in forums. Most people testify that it works fast. Why? First of all, you have to understand that when you have fever or exposed to sunlight, this will activate the virus. When you apply ice on the herpes virus, they become dormant again. This should stop the virus from spreading further. When the virus stop replicating, the healing can begin.

There are some drastic measures that people use at home. For example, I have heard that bleach is used to treat cold sores. However, it can be awful painful. Instead, I think a better option is to use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide which is commonly used by nurses to clean wounds. You will still feel the stinging effect but it is not as bad as using bleach.

Some prefer to use herbal remedies. There are some potent herbs you can use to treat fever blisters naturally. The most one that I come across is lysine. In fact, there is a study performed several years ago for a company that produced lysine supplements. From the study, lysine could inhibit the progress of the HSV1. And most subjects in the study is said to recover fully within 3 days.

B12 injection Interactions With Other Medications

B12 injection Interactions With Other Medications

A B12 injection and b12 deficiency symptoms may cause a conflict with other medications you are taking, and this may cause anxiety. You should never get a B12 injection without making sure that your doctor is aware of every medication you are currently taking and any conditions you have that the injection may affect. Things that your doctor should be aware of are vitamins and dietary supplements, which can often cause anxiety after a B12 injection. Conditions that your doctor should know about are kidney disease, liver disease, any infections, any other known deficiencies (especially iron and folic acid) and allergies you have to any medications or vitamins.

If you are suffering from anxiety and believe that this is a side-effect of a B12 injection, then talk to a doctor. B12 deficiency and anxiety is not an expected reaction to a B12 injection, and it may signal some other problem. Until care is available, investigate possible causes such as drug interactions. Make sure you’re not taking any vitamins your doctor didn’t know about at the time of the injection, and make sure to avoid alcohol or drugs. When you can seek help, make sure you tell the doctor that you checked all of these things.

This week we are talking about veganism and health. Although many of us who subscribe to a vegan diet realize that a whole-foods, plant-based vegan diet is the healthiest diet on the planet, there are still lots of people this information has not yet reached. For this reason it’s important to keep working to get good information out there. In light of our theme this week we asked a few of the experts we have had the pleasure of working with here on the Vegan Mainstream blog this question:

Why is veganism, in your opinion, the ultimate healthy lifestyle?

Here are their answers:

Rip Esselstyn

There is a quote from Jack Lalanne that goes: “Exercise is King, Diet is Queen, combine the two and you have a health kingdom.” Personally, I would reverse the two: “Diet is King, exercise is queen.”  After all, nothing can touch fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds when it comes to foods that ensure the body receives an abundance of phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, water, complex carbs, healthy fats, plant proteins, and fiber. A plant-strong, whole food, vegan diet should be the foundation of everyone’s lifestyle.

Rip Esselstyn, author of the Engine 2 Diet,  is a former professional triathlete and firefighter. Now Rip (who is featured in the amazing film Forks Over Knives) spends his time teaching people the irrefutable connection between what they put in their mouths and their ability to reach their ideal weight and their ideal health.

Health means soundness and vigor of body or mind, and freedom from disease or ailment.  These qualities encompass a definite free-flow between the physical, the mental, and the energetic bodies of any entity. “Soundness” implies integrity of purpose, a harmonious confluence.  An ‘ultimate healthy’ lifestyle then integrates the highest ideals into practice and action.  Veganism, when incorporating the ultimate healthy whole foods vegan diet, combined with exercise and a commitment to the well-being of the other sentient beings and the environment, presents the optimal potential for soundness, freedom from physical and mental disease, and vigor of body and mind.

Leslie Ashburn

When I teach about a vegan lifestyle, a large part of my focus as a chef is placed on eating whole unprocessed plant-based foods, including a wide variety grains, beans, land and sea vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Health in America has declined significantly due to the corporate food system that encourages large portions of inexpensive and heavily processed food. With a higher calorie intake and less physical activity, we have become afflicted by problems like high rates of obesity.  Nutrition-related disorders, including both micro-nutrient deficiencies and nutrition-related chronic diseases (i.e. diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer), have become serious health problems. In contrast, a varied and nutritious vegan diet focused on whole unprocessed ingredients is extremely health-supportive and I believe creates greater overall well-being, including a more optimistic outlook on life as well as strong and vibrant health. Not only does research consistently support the health-related aspects, but I observe this to be true with my customers who for example, start sleeping better and find they have more energy. In addition to this, when we cut out animal foods, we are making an impact on Mother Earth, loving her better by reducing our carbon foot-print.

Deb Gleason

We are all born with the innate wisdom to do no harm to ourselves and others. Marketing and myths have gotten in the way of that and too often we make decisions that fall outside of those innate values. We choose to eat cheap, heavily processed foods from factories and factory farms and disregard the impact they have on our planet, the animals we share it with and our own bodies. Choosing veganism is choosing to stand up for ourselves and all of the living systems our choices impact. Veganism is the ultimate healthy lifestyle because it connects us to our inner wisdom and when we are connected we are the healthiest we can be.

Robert Cheeke

The vegan lifestyle is the ultimate way of healthy living for a variety of reasons backed by science and logic. A diet that is based around the fundamental concept of eating real foods will naturally provide real nourishment for optimal health. The primary sources of nutrition, which are essential in sustaining life and contribute to a thriving existence, come in their original forms from plant-based whole foods. These required nutritional components including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, and glucose originate from fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds and other plant foods. Eating exclusively plant-based foods also means you’ll avoid the consumption of cholesterol, and will likely consume lower amounts of saturated fats, antibiotics, and hormones, which are all likely to be found in today’s animal-based foods because of how modern agriculture is cultivated and harvested. Choosing to reject animal-based foods in favor of plant-based whole foods not only ensures you’ll attain higher levels of health, but your lifestyle will also require fewer global resources. This will naturally be a more compassionate and sustainable way of living, creating a better world for all of us.

Greens are a key ingredient to optimal vegan health. Leafy greens are the epitome of clean eating and offer a bounty of nutritional riches, including iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium and vitamins K, C, E, as well as many of the B vitamins. Regardless of how much you love your kale or Swiss chard, eating them at every meal can get tiresome. Here are a few ways you can sneak more greens into your daily diet.

Blend them. Whenever I make a smoothie, I always pack my blender to the brim with baby spinach. It has no flavor and, while it does change the texture, is an excellent way to start my day—salad in a glass! One of my go-to combinations is frozen banana; frozen cherries; coconut, soy or almond milk; a tablespoon of cocoa powder; a tablespoon of almond butter and a healthy dose of greens. Yum!

Juice them. I wish I juiced more. My juicer, an old Champion, is giant, and the process of dragging it out, juicing, and cleaning it, always takes me the better part of an hour. As a result, I do it much less than I should. But juicing is a fantastic way to get in a slew of greens in one (or two or three) gulp(s).

In your oats. Okay, this technically is a sea algae, not a green. However, Spirulina—which I add to my morning oatmeal—is a complete protein and the host of a plethora of other essential vitamins and nutrients. It smells a little swampy, but if you add a teaspoon or two to your morning oats it has no flavor.
In your soup. When I make soup from scratch, I always plunk a handful or two of greens in at the end. However, even if you’re just heating up a quick can of your favorite pre-made soup, adding a handful of spinach will amp up your green intake.

Bake them. Savory green pies are not a novel concept. My favorite savory green pie includes Swiss chard, raisins and pine nuts. However, my mother has a green pie recipe that is a dessert, not an entree. Say what!? I wish I could share the recipe with you all, but I don’t even have it—it’s under lock and key! But I do know that it is made with dates, kale and spinach and sweetened with maple syrup. Go ahead and create your own sweet green pie–that would be a fantastic contest, right?

How do you sneak in your greens? Do you have a sweet green pie recipe you’re willing to share?

I worked for a couple years before med school as the database manager at the Center for Prostate Disease Research based out of the now closed Walter Reed Army hospital.  From looking at all the data in the database and speaking with the urologists I always new the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test wasn’t a good screening test for prostate cancer.  What’s more the surgeons did mention to me that there was no hard evidence that any of the interventions they tried once there was a cancer diagnosis had any effect on survival.  It is easy to be very critical and cynical about urologists intervening then, however, these were good people that I worked with I would even say I still look up to them, so why do they do so many prostatectomies, radiation and hormonal treatments?  Well, I would just say that late stage prostate cancer is something I hope I would never wish on my worst enemy.  It is slow moving and often ends with painful bone metastases and the like.  These physicians aren’t looking to make a buck, they are looking to try anything they can even if they don’t have anything that clearly works at the moment.  Of course we can hope that some of this is changing now as we learn more about more simple nutritional, micro-nutrient, antioxidant and other alternative therapies, though funding for studies in this area I have to imagine will be scarce in the near future.  This is just to say that it isn’t always conspiracy that conventional medicine doesn’t work we sometimes just don’t know what we are doing and don’t have something that works as much as we would like it to be otherwise.

All this is by way of preface for a write-up on a recent study on prostate cancer screening.

Yearly Prostate Cancer Screening Does Not Lower Total Number Of Deaths

“Mass prostate cancer screenings do not lower total number of deaths from prostate cancer, researchers from Washington University School of Medicine at St. Louis reported in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. They added that mass routine screenings do not even reduce numbers of deaths among males in their fifties and sixties, as well as patients with underlying health conditions.

The authors cited a US study involving 76,000 males that revealed that after six years of aggressive, yearly prostate cancer screening, there were more tumor diagnoses, but the number of deaths from prostate cancer did not drop.

The latest results of PLCO (Prostate, Lung, Cancer, Colorectal and Ovarian), which were published on January 6th, showed that the majority of men do not need to be screened every year for prostate cancer.

Lead author, Gerald Andriole, MD, wrote:

“The data confirm that for most men, it is not necessary to be screened annually for prostate cancer. A large majority of the cancers we found are slow-growing tumors that are unlikely to be deadly.”
In the PLCO study, males aged 55 to 74 were randomly selected to receive routine care or a PSA test once a year for six years plus a digital rectal exam for four years. Routine care means the patient only gets a PSA screening test if the doctor recommends one.

Dr. Andriole explained that this report provides updated data on an earlier report published in NEJM (New England Journal of English), 2009, when the team could not find any mortality benefit from routine prostate cancer screening.Read More

I recall now that one of the residents who rotated through the Center for Prostate Disease Research was one Dr. Finger and so it also occurs to me that a side benefit to this recent study is that the routine yearly finger wave or digital rectal exam of the prostate should now also be a thing of the past.  Yet another bizarre and it turns out useless practise brought to you by conventional medicine.

Even back when I was doing database work urologist where trying all sorts of variations on the PSA test to see if things could be improved for instance PSA density, i.e PSA levels/volume of prostate or PSA velocity i.e. rate of change of PSA over time.  Actually, I was fortunate enough at that time to help co-author a study looking at using a neural net based system and a number of variables (PSA, Gleason grade, surgical margins etc) to see if  prostate cancer occurrence could be predicted.  I’ll dig out the paper if anyone is really interested but in a nutshell, while not a huge advance, neural nets are cool and they look to actually work a little better than traditional statistical approaches, on the downside who knows exactly what they are doing or how they are working.

So to sum it up it turns out despite the Prostate Specific Antigen name, PSA just isn’t a very good test for prostate cancer and even when it accurately finds a cancer there isn’t a great home-run type of intervention.   Really what the evidence and studies are telling us is that as regards survival (a really good end-point) prostate cancer screening is worthless, but far be it from me to put it so bluntly.  With what a slow growing cancer prostate cancer is (which is one of the reasons the traditional kill all fast growing cells approach doesn’t work well) it is probably a great candidate for things like improving anti-oxident levels and the like.  Haven’t looked in the literature to see if there is anything on more natural, orthomolecular approaches and prostate cancer will try and do that some time.  However, seeing as traditional medicine doesn’t have a great offering, the traditional approaches have very serious to awful side effect profiles and one has time with the slow growing cancer to try alternative approaches I can’t imagine why anyone with prostate cancer shouldn’t look into them.

Men’s Fitness. Get Fit And Build Some Muscle

Men’s Fitness

A lot of guys always think fitness is only about being healthy on the inside. Far be it from the truth. Being fit is all about being fit both in the body and mind. This also includes being free from dideases, toxins and free radicals within our bodies too. This method really should be part of every fitness and muscle growth program

Without a doubt, fitness should be part of everybody’s lives if they wish to live a long and disease free life. In fact consider the time in fitness to be a very important part of their live’s, that they incorporate it into their regime.

Even though it’s recommended that both sexes retain their health and fitness, men are especially advised to maintain fitness over the age of 50. This is primarily due to males being very vulnerable to disease after this age. Chronic diseases like hypertension and diabetes are very common in males after 50 years of age and it is here most men suffer these diseases and die from them.

Diabetes is a disease in which the pancreas partly loses its function making the body lose its ability to store glucose while hypertension can cause heart attack. If you are seeking to get strong and stay strong, it may be time you did something about it and started bringing your body back from bad health and learn how to get fit and maybe even learn how to grow muscle

Working in journalism, I have frequently heard the phrase “there is no such thing as bad press.” However, I wonder if this always holds true. For veganism, which is often misunderstood, I believe there can certainly be bad press. 2011 was a big year for veganism, and although much of the attention it garnered was positive, there were certainly also some negative lights shone on the lifestyle.

A couple in France face up to 30 years in prison for refusing to feed their infant formula and instead relying solely on breast milk. This doesn’t seem out of the ordinary—tons of parents opt for breastfeeding only. However, in this specific case, the mother’s milk was deficient in vitamins, specifically vitamin A and b12, which prosecutors attributed to the vegan diet of the mother. Millions of babies around the world end up with vitamin deficiencies, in cases that are sometimes fatal. Yet the parents of these children are not charged with “food deprivation followed by death.” Had the mother been an omnivore with a vitamin deficiency, would the couple still be charged the with same crime? Whether these parents have been wrongfully accused is not up to me to decide, but it does make me think about the way vegans are being portrayed here. It is very possible to raise a healthy vegan child, yet this case makes it seem otherwise. On top of that, it shows these vegan parents as extremist, and even cruel, by ‘depriving’ their child of vitamins based on their lifestyle choice.

Vegans are also frequently shown in a bad light for the extreme activism and attention-getting tactics that some vegans advocate in order to catalyze change. This year, well-known vegan actress Portia De Rossi opened up to VegNews magazine that she often feels more uncomfortable telling people she is vegan than that she is gay. When people hear she is vegan, they—according to De Rossi—often feel that she is going to preach, or that she will judge their lifestyle choices, which is not the case with her sexual preference.

It’s hard enough to spread the vegan message with so many misunderstandings and stereotypes about veganism floating around—for example: that we are all hemp-wearing hippies; that we can’t possibly get enough protein; that all we eat is lettuce; that we are all crazy, angry activists. Negative media attention only further exacerbates the idea that a vegan lifestyle is not sustainable, or that it can’t be deployed on a wide scale. I believe that when it comes to veganism, bad press is just that—bad.

What do you think? Do you cringe when you see veganism being ripped apart in the news? Or do you agree that there is no such thing as bad press?

A Muscle Building Tip That May Work Wonders

A Muscle Building Tip That May Work Wonders

Maybe you want to build up your muscles for your health, or maybe you just want to look good and there’s nothing wrong with that. Whatever your reason, there’s a right way and a wrong way to go about it. The truth is, any kind of mass building program is beneficial to your heart as well as to your muscles. If you’re trying to build up your muscles, there are particular muscle building workouts that are designed specifically to help you.

To increase the size of muscle, the muscle must be stimulated. One way of providing the stimulation your muscles need is to exercise so your muscles will grow in size.A muscle building tip that has helped many to attain their goal is to begin training with free weights. Strength and resistance exercise will also help by motivating your muscles to develop.

A workout routine of lifting weights combined with strength training exercises will begin to gradually bulk up your muscles. Muscle building workouts done on a regular basis will not only develop muscle mass but will add to your overall health. If you are a beginner, you will want to start out with lighter free weights and slowly increase the amount of weight you lift and the number of repetitions you perform.

Free weight training along with strength and resistance training will gradually help your body develop muscle. You can use this muscle building tip to your advantage if you remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your muscles won’t be built in a day either. Building muscle is a slow process, but perseverance is the keyword to success. Anyone who has gone through the process of building up their muscles will confirm that they have been discouraged by the apparent lack of progress, but eventually they reached and maintained their goal.

Mass building workouts along with strength training will further enhance your chances of success in building muscle. Bench presses, pull-ups, push-ups, squats, and/or other exercises that target specific muscles are very effective in building muscle. It is important that you rest in between muscle building workouts to allow your muscles time to recover.

Whether you are a beginner or a pro, one common occurrence while doing muscle building routines is the possibility of muscle spasms. A muscle spasm occurs when a voluntary muscle (those you can control) bunches up and tightens. Muscle spasms can occur for several reasons or no reason at all, with the result being a painful muscle contraction, or muscle spasm. Muscle spasms can sometimes be relieved by resting the muscle, massaging it or by moving around. The best way to avoid these painful spasms is to do proper warm-up exercises, and let your muscles rest in between workouts.

If you want to be successful in your efforts to build muscle mass, it is important to follow these and other muscle building tips when you begin your muscle building routine.

Best face creams should eliminate sensitive skin care needs

Best face creams should eliminate sensitive skin care needs

Are there really any best face creams, best eye creams or best wrinkle creams? No, not really. No matter what the facial products companies tell you there are no “best face creams” that will work for everyone you know. Even what they say is best may not work for you. The one thing you need to know about this “Best” topic is it’s very subjective and is based on opinion, not fact. However, f you have problems with wrinkles, marks or dark circles there are face creams you can use that will work.

When you find a face cream formula that works best you’re in luck. Others may take forever and try many different facial or skin creams and never find one that works well for them. It can take some time but if you but if you keep looking and trying new ones you will find the best face creams for you.

Sensitive skin care is a problem for many people. Sensitive skin is easily irritated by many different things that can cause redness, inflammation and even scaly areas that itch and other problems.

Thin skin is the biggest cause of sensitive skin. Skin is thicker on some parts and thinner on other parts and skin tends to get thinner as we age. The reason that thin skin is more sensitive is that the lower levels of skin have less protection from the sun, wind, temperature and chemicals.
