Radiation readings spike at water tank at Japan's ruined nuclear plant
By Tetsushi Kajimoto TOKYO (Reuters) - Radiation near a tank holding highly contaminated water at Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant has spiked 18-fold, the plant's operator said on Sunday, highlighting the struggle to bring the crisis under control after more than two years. Radiation of 1,800 millisieverts per hour - enough to kill an exposed person in four hours - was detected near the bottom of one storage tank on Saturday, Tokyo Electric Power Co, also known as Tepco, said. An August 22 readings measured radiation of 100 millisieverts per hour at the same tank. ...

Isis Reports Interim Phase 2 Data on ISIS-APOCIII Rx as a Single Agent in Patients With Very High to Severely High Triglycerides
Conference call webcast and slide presentation Tuesday, Sept. 3, 11:30 a.m. ET at www.isispharm.com
Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (PRNewsFoto/Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc.)
CARLSBAD, Calif., Aug. 31, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: ISIS) announced interim data from an ongoing Phase 2 study of ISIS-APOCIIIRx as a monotherapy in patients with very high to severely high triglycerides. These data were presented today by Dr. Daniel Gaudet at a PACE session occurring concurrently with the European Society of Cardiology in Amsterdam. In this study, patients treated with ISIS-APOCIIIRx achieved statistically significant mean reductions of up to 79 percent in apolipoprotein C-III (apoC-III) and up to 75 percent in triglycerides. In addition, patients treated with ISIS-APOCIIIRx achieved statistically significant mean increases of up to 57 percent in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), the 'good' cholesterol. Patients also achieved up to 89 percent mean reduction in apoC-III-associated very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) particles.

"Patients with very high levels of triglycerides experience a significant number of health problems, including type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and, for patients with severely elevated triglycerides, pancreatitis. For these patients, there are very limited treatment options and what is needed is a much more effective drug that can be used as a single agent or in combination with other triglyceride-lowering agents," said Daniel Gaudet, M.D., Ph.D., from the department of medicine, University of Montreal and scientific director, Genome Quebec Biobank Technology Center. "The comprehensive Phase 2 data reported this summer demonstrate that ISIS-APOCIIIRx has the potential to fill this need."
The monotherapy portion of the ongoing Phase 2 study of ISIS-APOCIIIRx is a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled 13-week study designed to assess the safety and activity of ISIS-APOCIIIRx in patients with very high to severely high triglyceride levels (between 440 and 2,000 mg/dL). The data reported today is an interim analysis of 28 patients who completed 13 weeks of treatment with ISIS-APOCIIIRx or placebo. In this study, patients treated with ISIS-APOCIIIRx experienced dose-dependent, robust and prolonged, mean percent reductions from baseline in apoC-III, triglycerides and apoC-III-associated VLDL particles. Furthermore, these patients demonstrated a rapid, prolonged and statistically significant mean percent increase from baseline in HDL-C.
Table 1: ISIS-APOCIIIRx Produced Statistically Significant Reductions of Triglycerides, ApoC-III and ApoC-III-associated VLDL as a Single Agent in a Phase 2 Study in Patients with Very High to Severely High Triglyceride Levels. Mean % Changes From Baseline at Primary Endpoint.*

non-HDL | +17% | -8% (p=0.16) | -5% (p=0.36) | -39% (p=0.007) |
P value = vs. placebo *Interim analysis |
In the ongoing study, patients received 100 mg, 200 mg or 300 mg dose of ISIS-APOCIIIRx, or placebo via weekly subcutaneous injections. In this interim analysis, patients had an average fasting triglyceride level of 602 mg/dL with incoming triglyceride levels up to 1,822 mg/dL. In this study ISIS-APOCIIIRx was found to be generally safe and well tolerated. The most common adverse event (AE) was injection site reactions, which were infrequent, predominantly mild and typically resolved rapidly. There were no flu-like symptoms, no treatment-related elevations of liver enzymes greater than three times upper limit of normal, no abnormalities in renal function and no clinically meaningful changes in other laboratory values.
"We are pleased with the performance of ISIS-APOCIIIRx to date. We have now demonstrated that ISIS-APOCIIIRx is equally effective in patients with high to severely high triglycerides as well as in patients with high triglycerides and type 2 diabetes. We have demonstrated that ISIS-APOCIIIRx can work equally well as a single agent and in combination with fibrates to produce significant reductions in apoC-III and triglycerides, and increases in HDL-C. In addition, the positive effect of ISIS-APOCIIIRx treatment on lipid parameters, improvements in glucose control and trends toward improvements in insulin sensitivity, suggest that ISIS-APOCIIIRx could have a very attractive therapeutic profile for patients with severely high triglycerides, who often also have diabetes or metabolic syndrome," said Richard Geary, Ph.D., senior vice president of development at Isis. "We look forward to discussing our Phase 3 plans with regulators and moving rapidly into a Phase 3 program next year in patients with severely high triglycerides."
ISIS-APOCIIIRx is an antisense drug intended to treat patients with severely high triglycerides either as a single agent or in combination with other triglyceride-lowering agents. ISIS-APOCIIIRx targets apoC-III, a gene produced in the liver that plays a central role in the regulation of serum triglycerides. Humans who do not produce apoC-III have lower levels of triglycerides and lower instances of cardiovascular disease. In clinical studies, patients with lower levels of apoC-III and triglycerides exhibit lower cardiovascular event rates. Humans with elevated levels of apoC-III have increased dyslipidemia associated with multiple metabolic abnormalities, such as insulin resistance and/or metabolic syndrome. In addition, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increased in patients with elevated triglycerides.

The post Will sleeping with makeup on actually age your skin? appeared first on beautyeditor.
Lecturing people about taking their makeup off before bed is the average beauty editor’s favourite pastime (second only to hysterical evangelism about sunscreen).
But don’t worry—this isn’t going to be a lecture. Instead, I want to talk about some of the claims coming out of the latest Daily Mail sensationalist beauty piece, about how 40-year-old writer Anna Pursglove aged herself by an incredible 10 years in four weeks… all, apparently, from wearing her makeup to bed.
The experiment was inspired by a recent stat (source unknown) that found a third of women sleep with makeup on at least twice per week. Author Anna wanted to know why, when it’s common knowledge that it’s bad for your skin—so she decided to not wash her face at night for a entire month! Actually, it’s even worse, as she further clarifies:
“I would give my face a cursory wash in the shower each morning but I would be allowed to use none of my usual cleansing creams, and would have to reapply new make-up over the remnants of the old each day.”
I’m not certain, but I think that means she only washed with water… so basically, she didn’t really clean her face AT ALL. Nor did she apply moisturizer. Nor did she exfoliate. (More on those key facts in a second.)
Here’s what Anna looked like before the experiment:
She’s wearing makeup here, so it’s impossible to really assess the true condition of her skin going into this. To me, it looks like she has some minor inflammation (redness), fine lines, sagging and pigmentation.
Here’s what she looked like, with no makeup at all, after the four-week test:
So this is what 10 years older looks like—at least according to the dermatologist in charge of the assessment.
Not good, but in a way there are aspects of her skin that I actually think look better in the “after” picture! Yes, there is a ton of redness and all of those inflamed patches, but I also think her skin has a healthier colour and appears firmer, the pores aren’t so visible and the under-eye area doesn’t look as puffy. Then again, it could just be that I don’t like her makeup job in the “before” photo—that under-eye mascara really drags her face down and I have no idea what’s happening above her eyebrows.
But really, it’s impossible to tell just from photos because the lighting and angles here are not consistent. So I want to examine all of the problems the dermatologist identified after a month of this “routine,” one by one.
Does sleeping with makeup on give you drier skin?
Anna’s skin was very flaky and dry by the end of this, particularly on her cheeks, and she had cracking at the corners of her lips. The derm identified a five percent decrease in moisture levels, which resulted in a 10 to 20 percent worsening in skin texture.
Well, duh! She didn’t use moisturizer at all for a month (and I guess no lip balm either), so how is this the left-on makeup’s fault? When women go the occasional night without washing their faces, I guarantee that 99 percent of them are cleansing properly, following with moisturizer, in the morning.
So rather than a study of what happens when you don’t wash off makeup, I think this test is actually reflective of what happens when you don’t moisturize. (To be clear, I’m not saying that everyone needs moisturizer, either—this summer, I’ve been using just my super-light Consonant HydrExtreme serum and my skin has been absolutely fine—but if you have dry skin already, you certainly don’t want to deprive it of something more nourishing.)
Consonant HydrExtreme Extreme Hydration Booster, $149.00
The other thing to mention is exfoliating, which many women do with manual or chemical exfoliants, or just by the act of rubbing with a face cloth or towel after washing. If Anna wasn’t doing this, then it’s no wonder that the dead skin cells built up and contributed to the dryness, along with a duller texture.
Does sleeping with makeup on give you wrinkles?
Another claim by the dermatologist was that Anna had developed deeper wrinkles, not on her forehead but on the left and right sides of her face. I can’t tell from looking at the pictures, but this is where her skin became driest—so it makes complete sense that the wrinkles would become more visible there too.
The whole moisturizer avoidance thing is a CLASSIC skincare company trick to get you to believe that their products are doing something. Not all of them, but many will run studies where the participants have to avoid moisturizer completely for a week or so before starting the trial of the new product. Obviously there’s going to be an improvement regardless of what fancy ingredients are in it, because moisture plumps up wrinkles. Simple as that.
So again, it’s not the makeup’s fault—just common sense that if you skip a night of moisturizing, then your skin won’t be as plumped-up in the morning.
Does sleeping with makeup on increase redness and irritation?
Anna’s already sensitive skin became two percent more red, which the derm said was a sign of irritation. The makeup forms a barrier over the skin that locks in irritants and keeps out moisture, exacerbating any allergic reactions.
I absolutely agree—although two percent is not very much and this is from an entire month of the behaviour (which is not a realistic way that women care for their skin). Still, I think that us sensitive types need to be very careful whether it’s day OR night. I’ve had allergic reactions develop out of nowhere, even with products I’d been consistently using (like Touche Éclat!), so leaving them on overnight could increase the risk.
The other thing to consider is your eyelashes. Without properly removing her mascara, Anna’s started clumping together, she developed eyelash dandruff and even woke up with a swollen eye one morning (due to a mascara-coated lash getting caught in it). God forbid, you could even develop an eye infection. That alone is enough reason for me to diligently remove my makeup every night!
The best combo I’ve found, that gets absolutely every speck of mascara off, is my no-rinse Bioderma micellar cleanser (in Canada it’s called Sensibio):
With my trusty designer cotton pads:
I was using these products just for removing eye makeup, but that morphed into doing my whole face with them instead of regular cleanser! It works, it’s easy and it feels like less effort than having to splash around in the sink. I don’t think I’ve washed my face at night with gel cleanser for probably four months!
I also really love these:
Yes to Cucumbers Facial Towelettes, $5.99
They’re really gentle and work great at removing even stubborn eye makeup, but won’t dry out your skin.
Does sleeping with makeup give you larger pores?
Anna’s pores became five percent larger, thanks to the build-up of makeup clogging and stretching them, making them more noticeable. The derm said it was a sign that her skin had aged over the month, giving this as the reason:
“Older people naturally have larger pores because, with age, elasticity decreases so the structures that support the skin, and keep pores tight, become slacker.”
Huh? I don’t get how elasticity can be affected in just one month from not washing your face. But still—I am in agreement that leaving on anything that is potentially pore-clogging isn’t the best idea. People with acne-prone skin need to be especially careful about removing all traces of makeup (along with the day’s oil left on skin). Even changing your pillowcases more often can make a difference.
The bottom line about sleeping with makeup on
Don’t get me wrong; I’m not advocating sleeping with makeup on by any means. But hey, it happens! And I don’t think it’s the horror show that the Daily Mail is suggesting here–at least not if you’re only doing it on an occasional basis, which I think is how it happens with most of us.
Plus, like I said, most of us double-up on cleansing and moisturizing the day after we sleep with makeup on—not pile more on over top! That’s just not realistic behaviour. I don’t personally know any women who don’t wash their faces or use moisturizer, EVER—but if they’re out there, I’m guessing they probably don’t wear makeup either. So the chance of clogging pores and developing infections and allergies is much less.
As far as aging goes, skipping moisturizer and leaving dry skin to get drier and drier appears to be the worse skin sin than the occasional late night without cleansing.
Let’s talk about this:
Do you ever sleep with makeup on or are you religious about your routine?
What do you make of Anna’s experiment?
Do you think skipping moisturizer is worse than sleeping with makeup on?

Corbett to Sebelius: Need Response to Save CHIP for Pennsylvania's Children
HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 30, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Tom Corbett sent a third letter today to U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius asking her not to involuntarily move children currently covered under Pennsylvania's Children's Health Insurance Program (PA CHIP) into Medicaid.
The forced move is a requirement of the Affordable Care Act and would be effective Jan. 1, 2014.
Corbett has argued that PA CHIP is a national model that provides not only a robust array of health insurance benefits, but also access to more doctors and hospitals than traditional Medicaid. He's also expressed concerns that moving children from PA CHIP's commercial insurance platform to Medicaid could cause disruptions in their relationships with their health care providers and delays in their ability to access care.
For more information or to read previous correspondence with HHS, visit www.insurance.pa.gov and click on "Affordable Care Act News."
Media contact: Christine Cronkright, Governor's Office, 717-783-1116
Editor's Note: Today's letter is included below. Previous letters on this subject are posted on www.insurance.pa.gov under the "Affordable Care Act News" button.
Aug. 30, 2013
Dear Secretary Sebelius:
As you know, I am very concerned by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) contention that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires certain children in Pennsylvania's Children's Health Insurance Program (PA CHIP) be involuntarily moved into Medicaid.
I communicated this concern to you during our face-to-face meeting on April 2, 2013, in Washington D.C. and in subsequent letters to you dated May 30, 2013, and June 26, 2013. In fact, in all three instances, I specifically asked for approval from the Obama Administration to allow Pennsylvania to preserve PA CHIP for the children and families that currently enjoy its benefits. I have attached copies of those letters that fully explain the Commonwealth's position, why we believe you have the authority to grant this approval and why any ruling to the contrary would directly violate NFIB v. Sebelius.
As a former Governor, you understand the need for timely and definitive answers, yet to date I have not received a response from you to my requests. This prolonged absence of a clear response has created significant operational and systems challenges for Pennsylvania. Any further delays in receiving a response from you only increases the risk of creating additional healthcare disruption for thousands of Pennsylvania children and families.
I ask that you respond in writing to my request by no later than September 6, 2013. I firmly believe that PA CHIP is the right program to meet the healthcare needs of Pennsylvania children. I remain committed to working with you and Pennsylvania families to preserve this great program and ensure all Pennsylvania children have access to quality and affordable healthcare coverage.
Sincerely,
Tom Corbett
Governor

Take the Bite Out of Labor Day
ST. LOUIS, Aug. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Nothing puts a damper on end-of-summer picnics and campouts faster than biting bugs. Unfortunately, mosquitoes and other insect pests come with the summertime territory. You can keep pesky – and sometimes dangerous – bugs from ruining your time outdoors over the long Labor Day weekend by taking three steps for complete protection: Treat yourself, treat the yard and treat your deck, patio or campsite. By creating a Bite-Free Zone™ of protection during your festivities, you can help keep your family safe from mosquitoes and the diseases they may carry.
1. First, use a personal insect repellent as your main line of defense against biting bugs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using a repellent when spending time outdoors as a highly effective way to minimize risk of contracting West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne illnesses. Personal repellents are available in a variety of application methods and active ingredients, ranging from the familiar DEET to newer ingredients like oil of lemon eucalyptus.
- DEET-based insect repellents, such as Unscented Backwoods Cutter® and Cutter® All Family® insect repellents, are recommended for those who plan to spend longer periods of time outdoors in more heavily infested conditions. Length of protection depends on the percentage of DEET in the product. Formulas with 30 percent concentrations or lower can be used on children ages 2 months and older.
- Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, derived from the leaves of the Eucalyptus citriodora tree, naturally repels mosquitoes for up to six hours. You can use oil of lemon eucalyptus-based products, like Cutter® Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent, on children 3 years and older.
- Geraniol-based products, such as Cutter® Natural Insect Repellent, utilize the inherent repellent properties of the geranium flower to repel mosquitoes and other nuisance pests for hours.
Did you know that mosquitoes can detect an unprotected area of skin the size of a dime? In addition to using a personal repellent, you can limit your exposure by dressing strategically: Wear long sleeves and long pants outdoors when mosquitoes are most active (around dusk and dawn). Avoid using scented soaps, perfumes and hair spray when you know you're going to be outside for an extended period of time.
2. Second, treat your lawn with an all-purpose, EPA-registered lawn insecticide with residual efficacy against mosquitoes. Cutter® Backyard™ Bug Control Spray Concentrate, for example, creates a barrier against biting bugs in your lawn for up to 8 weeks of control. Spray over the entire yard, including ornamental trees, shrubs and flowers, and onto outdoor surfaces. Just remember to spray early enough to allow the product to completely dry before your Labor Day backyard get-together.
Mosquitoes breed near sources of water. Be proactive in preventing mosquitoes from congregating in your lawn. Remove standing water in flower pots, on pool covers and in outdoor pet bowls. Make sure your gutters are clean and unclogged and that your downspouts drain effectively so puddles aren't left behind after it rains. Mow your lawn regularly to keep mosquitoes from seeking refuge on tall grass.
3. Last, use an area repellent around your patio, deck or campsite to create a zone of mosquito protection while you're spending time outdoors. Easy-to-use, all-weather citronella products, such as the American Holiday-themed Cutter® CitroGuard® Triple Wick Candle, use the natural repelling properties of citronella oil to repel mosquitoes and other flying bugs. If you're camping out or picnicking, bringing along an area fogger such as Cutter® Backyard™ Bug Control Outdoor Fogger can give you several hours of mosquito protection. Just spray infested areas or surfaces and allow the fog to drift over the area.

Smile Makeover Experts, Dr. Hakimzadeh and Dr. Reyhani, Featured in Cosmo and Angeleno Magazines
WEST HILLS, Calif., Aug. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The dentists operating out of West Hills Smiles, a top-notch office specializing in concierge dentistry, are spreading the word about their signature approach to their craft. With two spreads in popular magazines out this month, Ben Reyhani, DDS and Pasha Hakimzadeh, DDS share their feelings on a broad range of topics, from anti-aging tips to restorative dentistry techniques. The full-page layouts also help establish the smile makeover experts as authorities in the field of cosmetic dentistry for style-minded patients.
The first one was published in the September issue of the style bible for many women, Cosmopolitan. Behind the cover graced by Nina Dobrev lies a page on "the Smile of Your Dreams" featuring the beaming faces of Dr. Ben and Dr. Pasha. Here, the pair answers common questions that they've most likely heard from many patients:
- "How can I get whiter teeth?"
- "Is it easy to straighten teeth?"
- "What can I do if I have larger gaps and unevenly crooked teeth?"
The West Hills Smiles resident dentists then explain their smile makeover treatment methods for each of these questions. Whiter teeth, up to 4 shades, can be achieved through "a simple in-office power whitening" followed up with home care, most likely through take-home trays or standard good dental habits. For straighter teeth, the doctors promote their clear braces treatment, which is less invasive than metal brackets and can even be removed for important events. Finally, they describe their complete dental makeover plan in response to the last question, performed by strategic and effective use of porcelain veneers.
The second ad targets a more local niche. Featured in the August issue of Angeleno, the Los Angeles-based title from Modern Luxury, an interview with Dr. Pasha proffers "solutions for an aging face." The spread highlights the dental issues that come with age and their often unattractive impact of maturing a patient's appearance. Changes in smiles as we age, including shorter teeth, altered bite, and loss of tautness of the skin around our mouths, are offered minimally-invasive solutions by Dr. Pasha. Through an approach that differs for each patient and respects their individuality, a West Hills Smiles patient can take years off of his or her appearance. This most commonly means utilizing a combination of veneers, gum reshaping, tooth whitening, replacing metal amalgam fillings with tooth-colored materials, and other cosmetic dental treatments.
To experience dentistry fresh out of the pages of your favorite luxury or fashion magazine, contact the West Hills Smiles team to schedule a consultation with Dr. Ben or Dr. Pasha at your earliest convenience. The doctors always prioritize the comfort of their patients, both in office and through their treatments, prioritizing conservative and preventative methods ahead of invasive surgical means with every single patient. What’s your story?
Everyone has one. Watching ‘Welcome to the World of Weight Loss’ really bought that home for me. We are so quick to judge, yet have no idea why a person has ended up where they have – be that overweight, an alcoholic, a drug user…
Everyone who attends a weight loss group wants to lose weight! That might sound rather obvious, yet why do some people manage it when others don’t? I don’t think it is a about a lack of desire…I think life gets in the way. Watching WTTWOWL the other evening made me laugh, smile, frown and cry. There were stories about childhood habits, bullying, broken marriages, children with learning disorders with a mum who felt guilty and blamed herself for this, body dismorphic disorder…so many underlying reasons.
I used to think that losing weight was a case of eating less and moving more…and that if you really wanted it, you would do it. If I am being honest, I still do think this to a great extent – but after seeing these stories, and those of people who contact me – I am mellowing a little. This isn’t to make excuses, but just to understand that weight is a complex issue. There are a variety of reasons that got us there, and a variety of reasons that hinder us getting back again!
The programme made me chuckle at times, but I felt so bad for people at the same time. I don’t actually think – as with most weight loss programmes – that it gave a balanced and fair view. For example, Weight Watchers is not a bad plan, yet the list of foods eaten in one day by one lady was horrendous. There were dolly mixtures, spring rolls, crackers and cheese, chicken burger, Danish biscuits, more spring rolls and not a veggie in sight – bless her! She was thrilled that she had been on plan that day though. It is hard not to make comparisons with Slimming World when you see things like this…you just couldn’t eat that in a day. There are good and bad on both plans though!
I listened to the presenter saying that syns were to be used for ‘guilty pleasures’…there is nothing ‘guilty’ about syns. It actually represents the word ‘synergy’ and is the thing that Slimming World believe helps us to stick to the plan and brings it all together. Another TV method of promoting weight loss organisations in a poor light! Then was talk of eating no brown food (I think beige would have been a more accurate description!), no cheese, no potatoes…it all sounded so restrictive.
Rosemary Conley is a plan that I don’t know much about – I know what is involved, but I have never tried it…only because there was never a local group though. I liked the portion pots that they hand out, but I wasn’t that keen when the leader – in a ‘private’ discussion with the presenter – said, “because unfortunately fat is not beautiful.” This was in relation to a question she was asked about whether or not she would still love her partner if they put weight on…it was a resounding ‘no!’…shame really; I wonder what her fat clients think after watching that…and whether her partner has stuck around!
I watched Panos – a Greek chap who tried to put on a happy front – talking about how he wasn’t happy to get fat, but was happy eating the food. Then there was Tammy – an emotional eater – who blames herself and carries so much guilt over her daughter who has severe learning difficulties…I cried a little watching her get upset. Hazel – who has body dismorphic disorder – and only leaves the house to attend her Rosemary Conley groups and to go to the shops…but has to be accompanied by her parents; it is too traumatic for her to leave the house. And then there was the lady who felt that God showed her the way to Weight Watchers…by creating a situation where she fell off a bus and had to be picked up by four men. So many sad stories with differing levels of weight loss success – but I doubt that any of us could say that their desire to lose weight was not there.
So just take a moment to think about your story. Would you want someone judging you without them knowing it? Maybe when you are next in class and wondering why that person never seems to lose weight, you could give them a bit of support. Unless of course Pizza Lady turns up at group…if so, just leave her be!
Right then…the usuals…
Today has been a bit of a nightmare. My story is that I never had any real reason to overeat – I started being a little greedy madam as a child (often behind my parents back – swapping good food for not so good food at school, getting the dinner ladies to give me leftovers!) and then learnt to rely on food for comfort – despite a loving home environment.
My story at the moment is that I am having an identity crisis. I used to be the career girl…the youngest and most successful in the first few companies I worked at – the only one in the family to go to university – a mortgage by the time I was 22 – a Mercedes by the time I was 23 – and TAG watches and expensive handbags (handbags and watches still fit fatties…so no designer label clothes, but plenty of designer accessories!) all paid for with the big income. Now, well now I don’t have that job…and I feel that I have lost my identity really. What is my purpose now? I don’t really want to return to the same sort of job just yet, as I want to keep the focus on hitting my target – and the work I did involved long hours, travel away from home…not exactly conducive to getting to group and getting the exercise in…or keeping the stress levels down. I feel like a bit of a waster – and this isn’t a plea for sympathy, or a call for a symphony of violins – but I feel as if I lack purpose. I know that I have so much to be thankful for, and so I don’t want to sound like a madam, but I have just lost my way a little and I am not at all where I had thought that I would be by the time I was 32. I have a plan of action…but I am having a wibble about it – would I make a good coach, will I get approved as a foster carer, will I ever get to my target…so many questions and so much uncertainty – it can be a bit overwhelming at times. I just need to man up and get on with it though I think!
So that is why today has been a bit of a nightmare…it has all been playing on my mind. And I also woke up with leg strain…pants!
Other than my mind working overdrive, I have worked on my other half’s project, been to the horses and to Asda, seen the kids…and am about to settle down and watch some TV to unwind.
Breakfast: Fruit salad.
Lunch: Quorn cheeseburgers (2 x HEA and 2 x HEB).
Dinner: Rice and bean ratatouille with cheese (12 syns).
Snacks: Cherry infused raisins (3 syns).
Today’s food has been functional – designed to stop me eating a horse. All I wanted today was junk…but managed to resist. Brekkie was a quick grab and go job, and lunch was also pretty quick too. Dinner was some mixed beans with rice and tomatoes, mushrooms, onion, pepper, courgette, spinach and garlic with herbs etc – it was supposed to be stuffed peppers, but I forgot and chopped the peppers before remembering!
Exercise: Nothing today.
Thank you for reading – and have a wonderful weekend!

The new Marc Jacobs Beauty cosmetic line includes the Marc Jacobs Beauty Magic Marc’er Precision Pen Eyeliner ($30 USD / $36 CAD), a black, felt-tip liquid eyeliner.. Marc Jacobs Beauty will be available exclusively at Sephora and Marc Jacobs stores on August 9, 2013 and is inspired by the spirit of youth, confidence and experimentation.
I already posted a review of this eyeliner in which I was very disappointed. I definitely received a defective eyeliner, and since I was one of the first to actually try the product, I had no idea that so many people loved this eyeliner (or else I would have assumed sooner). The one I had was defective in that it still worked, so it didn’t seem defective… it just seemed like an awful eyeliner! I have since received a new one, and I’m happy to re-publish this review with my updated thoughts.
This eyeliner comes in a long, sleek black lacquered pen with a felt-tip applicator. It’s a very beautiful, elegant and artistic-looking product. The applicator is quite stiff and comes to an ultra-precise point, which is great for detail work like getting into the inner corner and creating a perfect cat-eye flick. The harder you press, the thicker the line, the lighter you press, the thinner the line- almost like a calligraphy pen. This is where my original eyeliner failed- it applied the eyeliner with a lot of pressure, but not when you used it lightly (therefore it went on super patchy and messy).
The eyeliner formula is very liquidy, although still ultra black and pigmented. It dries fairly quickly, and it’s completely waterproof- there’s no budging this eyeliner until you remove it with an oil-based makeup remover. I’m still playing with it to see if it will replace my beloved Lancôme Artliner- so far, it’s looking pretty good for Marc!
I’m happy to say this eyeliner is a complete dream to work with- and thank you to all of you who suggested I try out another one!
