X ways you can help your man lead a healthier lifestyle

Slide Title:
Help him to eat a healthy diet
Image Text:

Nutritious food on the shopping list and on the table are part of a healthier lifestyle.

Leave out the processed foods, sugar, sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, trans fats, refined seed oils and vegetable oils.

Go for whole foods -- protein, fruit, veg, nuts, seeds, healthy fats and oils and whole fat dairy if he can handle it.

Does he have food sensitivities? Encourage him to find out.

If he has diabetes or metabolic syndrome, or if he has trouble keeping his weight down, help him watch his carb intake.

Slide Title:
2) Pump some iron together
Image Text:

Lifting weights lowers insulin levels, blood sugar levels and triglycerides. It improves cholesterol levels.

Weight lifting Increases growth hormone and testosterone, which also enhances a sense of well-being. Exercise improves hormone balance, and brain function.

Depression decreases. The risk for Alzheimer's, cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes and other chronic conditions decreases.

Slide Title:
3) Take a walk together
Image Text:

Go for a 20-minute walk in the sun, get some natural vitamin D. Walking with a pedometer will tell him how many steps he's travelled and if he's a competitive sort he can compete with his best numbers, and if you're a competitive sort he can also compete with you.

Experts suggest going for 10,000 steps a day.

Slide Title:
4) Take part in yoga or tai chi together
Image Text:

Tai chi and yoga gently improve balance, flexibility and strength. If either of you have health conditions that prevent other forms of exercise, consider these low-impact workouts.

Slide Title:
5) Do things you enjoy together.
Image Text:

Being physically active can burn calories, improve mood, lift self-esteem and reduce the effects of stress. But none of that will happen if he doesn't like what he's doing.

If he's doing something he loves, he's more likely to continue doing it. Perhaps he likes to swim or ride his bike. Maybe he's into martial arts. Join him in a dance class and make it a date night as well.

Slide Title:
6) Sleep together
Image Text:

Lack of sleep can leave him at risk for obesity, heart disease and other diseases. Lack of sleep throws hunger hormones leptin and ghrelin out of balance, paving the way for unwanted weight gain.

Does he have trouble sleeping? Is he not rested when he wakes up? Encourage him to make sure he doesn't have a sleep disorder like sleep apnea.

Develop a sleep routine together in which you go to bed and get up around the same time each day. Start lowering the lights as bedtime approaches. Sleep in the dark.

Slide Title:
7) Help him stay connected
Image Text:

Are you part of a family?Participate in family meals together. You will probably eat better, and have the emotional benefits of getting to know your family better and feeling more connected.

Connections don't have to be with family to be healthy, in fact depending on what you're family is like, sometimes too much family togetherness is a negative thing.

A support network of caring individuals does not have to be related to be genuinely nurturing.

Slide Title:
8) Actively cultivate a positive and supportive atmosphere
Image Text:

Laughter can lift a mood, sometimes changing it completely for the better. Laughing triggers the release of endorphins. Added bonus: they not only elevate mood, they also reduce the perception of pain.

Does he meditate or pray? Spending 10 to 20 minutes a day in some type of contemplation, away from the pressures and stress of daily life, may lower blood pressure and improve his outlook on life.
