Sleep Wrinkles

Sleep Wrinkles

Does your face really wrinkle while you sleep?  Just when you thought that a good night’s rest would leave your skin looking refreshed and regenerated in the morning – it turns out that if you are not sleeping in the right position you will awaken with more wrinkles than you had the night before!

Sleep wrinkles around eyes and side of face

Sleep wrinkles are those little lines on your face that you notice first thing in the morning. They occur when you have slept with your face buried in the pillow or from wrinkled sheets pressing into your skin. If you are sleeping on your side you are more prone for wrinkles especially on the chin and cheeks. Sleeping on your stomach increases furrowed eyebrows and leads to appearance of overall facial wrinkles and neck lines.Sleep wrinkles do disappear during the day, but over time, they will become permanent as pillow and fabric lines etch themselves into the skin, forming deep and lasting lines.Changing the way you sleep can be difficult.  You may start out with good intentions early in the night, but as deep sleep envelops you, you turn over and curl up into your most comfortable – and habitual – position.  There are some things you can do to help make the change more comfortable and permanent – here are some suggestions:

Dont’ sleep on your face – according to the American Acaddemy of Dermatology sleeping face down is one of the major causes of permanent sleep wrinkles.  Sleeping in the same position night after night etches sleep lines and wrinkles into the skin – these do not disappear when you wake up.

Do sleep on your back in an elevated position – if this feels uncomfortable, try placing a pillow under your knees to reduce the pressure on your lower back.

Do use a different pillow - firm pillows tend to promote deeper sleep wrinkles due to the additional pressure placed on the skin. Softer pillows, like feather pillows, are easily adjustable and apply less pressure on the skin. Concave pillows support the head and keep the face off the pillow.

Look for linens infused with natural minerals and enzymes like copper and aloe vera – a new trend in bedding, designed to heal and nourish you while you sleep.  Copper technology linens are an excellent way to stimulate collagen production and eliminate appearance of lines on your face.  Aloe Vera linens stimulate collagen and elastin and have a healing effect on the skin.

Apply a moisturizing night cream to your face 30 minutes before bed – this keeps the skin soft and prevents collagen breakdown over time.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day – without sufficient water the skin lacks hydration, espeically in the cooler months leaving the skin dry, tight and flaky.  Dry skin is less resilient and more prone to wrinkling – even at night.
