Thayer Rose Petal Witch Hazel Toner is a top selling toner on Amazon.com. Their ingredients are listed in a somewhat unconventional fashion so let’s look at the label to see what they say.

Thayer Rose Petal Witch Hazel Toner ingredients (with their comments in parentheses)

A proprietary blend of…

  • Witch Hazel extract
  • Aloe Vera
  • Vitamin E
  • Grapefruit Seed Extract
  • Butylene Glycol ( a natural humectant used to attract moisture)
  • Methylparaben (a gentle and safe preservative)
  • Polysorbate 20 (and emulsifier derived from Coconut Oil)
  • All-natural fragrance

The Beauty Brains comments

The “proprietary” claim is interesting since there’s nothing in this formula that isn’t available from multiple sources. Perhaps this refers to their “secret” blend of how much of ingredient is used.

While witch hazel is well recognized for its astringent properties it’s typically provided in an ethanol base. Since the label indicates this product is alcohol free we assume they’re using the butylene glycol as a solvent instead of ethanol. (Butylene glycol is not typically used as a humectant.)

It’s nice to see them call out methylparaben as “gentle and safe” in a time when most companies are jumping on the anti-paraben bandwagon.

The polysorbate 20 is required to disperse the fragrance. And speaking of fragrance,  we assume the “all natural fragrance” is some kind of rose oil given the product’s name.
